In the spring of 2013, RLMG was invited to produce a 16-screen video for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s upcoming exhibition, Samurai!  It was such a success, they’ve asked us to create the digital counterpart for every special exhibition since.

The Challenge

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (MFAB) is one of the most comprehensive art museums in the world. A sprawling space with extensive collections, the museum was looking for ways to differentiate their special exhibitions. They approached us with an appealing challenge – create a massive, 16-screen video that commands visitors’ attention and communicates the power and purpose of a major exhibition, in 90 seconds of video.

Our Approach

Positioned at the entrance to MFAB’s Gund Gallery, the video wall establishes a tone that stays with visitors throughout the exhibition. In many cases, it’s the only place where sound and movement are used to express and support the work on display.

Our approach was driven by a commitment to represent the artwork and the curatorial themes using the language and evocative potential of dynamic media. For Samurai!, skillfully choreographed camera movement, dramatic pacing and a taiko drumming soundtrack bring ancient warriors to life. In a very different approach for John Singer Sargent Watercolors, layering sequences and washes of color imply the path of a paintbrush and the ethereal qualities of watercolor.

We’ve continued to work with MFAB on a total of fourteen high-profile video displays. Each piece is very different, but all were carefully crafted to reflect the style, content and tone of the exhibition.
